The sisters of Zeta Tau Alpha (Zeta) and the brothers of Sigma Nu hope that Miami University students will strike out breast cancer as part of their philanthropy bowling tournament.
The event will take place Nov. 16 at Oxford Lanes and is open to Greek and non-Greek students.
For the first time, Zeta and Sigma Nu are co-hosting the philanthropy event to raise money for breast cancer research. All the money raised through the event will be donated to the Zeta Tau Foundation, an affiliation of the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
"Breast cancer is the national philanthropy of Zeta," said junior Jen Schufreider, the Zeta philanthropy chair. "We are raising the money we can to help breast cancer research."
The event will be comprised of teams of five, including sorority, fraternity and unaffiliated teams. Each team will pay $100 to participate.
Zeta and Sigma Nu have been planning the event since early this school year, according to Schufreider. Before this year, Zeta has hosted various other fall philanthropy events to raise money for breast cancer research.
"Every fall we have a philanthropy event," Schufreider said. "We did kick ball, but that lost enthusiasm. We had to come up with something that hasn't been done already which will have more interest."
Schufreider said they have high hopes for the bowling tournament.
"We decided bowling would be a good way to get involved and have fun," she said. "It helps because the other events we've had have been at mercy of weather so having something indoors has been good planning."
Although breast cancer is not Sigma Nu's philanthropy, Zeta decided they would be a good fraternity to work with.
"They (Sigma Nu) have a great relationship with our sorority and they've participated in our events a lot," Schufreider said. "Last year they participated in our 5K walk and they were overwhelmingly helpful and involved."
Junior James Siegel, Sigma Nu philanthropy chair, said the chapter is excited about participating in the event and thinks it is a great cause.
"We're trying to get more involved, we want to be more involved with philanthropies," Siegel said. "We wanted to have at least two philanthropy events this semester. We thought this was a good one to do. A couple of the brother's moms and we felt that it was a cause a lot of Sigma Nus are passionate about."
Overall, the sorority and fraternity hope the event will be beneficial not only to breast cancer research but to the community as a whole.
"We just really want to get people involved and more aware of how big of an effect breast cancer has on everyone," Schufreider said. "It's a good way to build a community with everyone working together on service events like this."
Siegel agreed.
"We want participants to have fun and we want to raise some money and do a good thing," he said.
Teams can register for the event through Schufreider at schufrjl@muohio.edu. Registration is open until Nov. 14 and forms can be turned into the ZTA mailbox in the Panhellenic office in Shriver Center.
