Bronze statues to honor Miami sports coaches

Miami University received a $1 million gift to build nine statues in Yager Sadium.

Donated by Daniel T. Van Voorhis and his family, the money will enable Miami to build bronze statues to honor former Miami coaches as part of the Cradle of Coaches celebration.

Van Voorhis is the grandson of Thomas P. Van Voorhis, a physical education instructor and coach from 1921-56. The sculptures will be created by Kristen Visbal of Lewes, Del.

She is known for her sculpture of Alexander Hamilton on High Street in Hamilton.

A portion of the donation will be used to help fund the construction of the new Bicentennial Student Center.
