Miami hockey team ranks No.1 in USA Today

Miami University men's hockey team will enter the 2009-10 season with a No. 1 ranking in USA Today's preseason poll.

The Redhawks collected four first-place votes and 457 points total to edge out the University of Denver and Boston University.

The Red and White start action with an exhibition game vs. Windsor Oct. 3.

Lecture to discuss Roosevelt, naturalist

Miami University Hamilton is hosting a presentation by Kathleen Dalton titled "John Muir meets Theodore Roosevelt" at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 1, in the Wilks Conference Center in Hamilton. The lecture is part of the Michael J. Colligan History Project lecture series.

Dalton is a professor of history at Philips Academy in Andover, Mass. She is a Roosevelt Scholar who will be discussing Roosevelt's relationship with naturalist John Muir.

Muir founded the Sierra Club and was an advocate for the preservation of the American wilderness, particularly the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California.

The event is free and open to the public. A reception will be held after the event in the Wilks atrium.

Students acknowledged for zoology research

A Miami University doctoral student and a master's student each received awards from the International Symposium of Environmental Physiology of Ectotherms and Plants in Japan in August.

Benjamin Philip, a zoology doctoral student, won best oral presentation by a student. Phillip's topic was based on his paper, "The Role of Aquaporins in Promoting Freeze Tolerance in Insects." Zoology master's student Yuta Kawarasaki was awarded best poster presentation by a student on his research on "Rapid Cold-Hardening Protects Against Cold-Induced Apoptosis."

MU professors honored for creative studies

Three professors have been presented with Distinguished Scholar Awards for their creative research during the 2008-09 year.

Robert Applebaum, from the sociology and gerontology department, James Creech, from the French and Italian department, and Chris Makaroff, from the chemistry and biochemistry department, were named by the committee on faculty research and the Office for Advancement of Research and Scholarships. Each received a $2,000 stipend to continue their research. For more information, visit http://www.units.muohio.edu/oars.
