The 2009 Greek Mega Fair will consist of more than booths filled with poster boards.

The National Pan-Hellenic Council (Panhel) and Interfraternity Council (IFC) will use a carnival-style "Greek Field Day" to attract potential new members into the Greek system Sunday on Central Quad.

According to Kate Moran, vice president of Panhel recruitment, Greek Mega Fair will be combined with games, activities and inflatables to give potential new members a taste of fun and Greek information simultaneously.

"It's more like field activities and the Greek Mega Fair is going to be on the edge of Central quad," Moran said. "Potential new members can meet chapters and participate. It's still the Greek Mega Fair."

The atmosphere will be very different compared to years past, according to Tommy Jeffcott, IFC's vice president of recruitment.

"In the past, we have had Greek Mega Fair and the atmosphere has been dull," Jeffcott said. "This year we wanted to hype it up more and draw a bigger crowd."

This year's event will consist of an array of outdoor activities ranging from cash cubes to putt-putt golf.

"Additionally there will be a number of other activities: some inflatables, a gladiator joust, a bungee run," Jeffcott said. "As well as a dunk tank, a cash cube, a radar baseball game, mini-golf, a basketball arcade shoot and a two-person obstacle course."

According to April Robles, director of the Cliff Alexander Office, the cost is a non-issue.

"They are taking monies that they would have used otherwise and in other places and directing it toward this activity," Robles said.

The IFC and Panhel also hope to see a rise in this year's attendance.

"We're setting up 53 tables right now," Moran said.

Jeffcott said he has been working hard with fraternal chapters to make sure attendance is higher than in previous years.

"I have made a point to personally contact all of the fraternities," Jeffcott said. "I've been contacting the presidents and recruitment chairs. Ultimately it's their choice but hopefully this year the word will be put out so that they are prepared for the event."

It is not only the fraternities and sororities that Moran and Jeffcott hope will be high in attendance but also potential new members.

"I would like to see the number be around 500," Jeffcott said. "If each chapter brings in ten people, it's pretty doable. Hopefully first-year students recognize how important this event is and capitalize on this opportunity."

The IFC and Panhel have also worked towards creating a new marketing tool for this event and other Go-Greek events. Recruitment chairs hope these tools will help attract more PNM's.

"We have a brand new marketing tool, it's a Facebook.com application," Jeffcott said. "IFCfacebook.com is for the fraternities. For the sororities it's Panhellenicfacebook.com

This is a recruitment tool through Facebook where IFC and Panhel are the administrators and we can post announcements and events."

Jeffcott also addressed any concerns that potential new members have about adding this tool.

"If they join the application I have no access to their profiles," Jeffcott said. "We aren't invading any privacy."

Jeffcott said he hopes this application and the Greek Field Day will encourage those interested to become more comfortable with the Greek community.

"We're lucky at Miami to have a whole semester to feel out Greek Life and (I hope potential new members) realize by making the most of the time this semester you're really doing yourself a great service," Jeffcott said. "So when the time comes to make the decision next semester for formal recruitment, you'll have a really good idea."
