"Arioi" in Polynesian means to excel in leaving a mark. This was true for everyone who knew Jason Madachy, a Miami University graduate who died June 9, 2007 while vacationing in Nag's Head, N.C., with his family.
Madachy was a superb student with a GPA above 3.0, a participant in Greek life through Sigma Pi fraternity as well as the medical fraternity Phi Delta Epsilon and a gracious and compassionate friend to all who knew him.
His parents, Joe and Dolly Madachy, will host the second annual fundraising dinner and auction in his honor at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Patrician Party Center in Eastlake, Ohio.
The Madachy family wants to raise money for stethoscopes for first-year medical students in hopes of furthering the dreams of future doctors. Jason Madachy had been accepted into the Joan C. Edwards Medical School at Marshall University. Dolly Madachy said her son had been telling his family and friends of the difference he had hoped to make one day.
"People always used to ask me what he would do if he didn't get into any medical schools," Dolly Madachy said. "But that was the thing about Jason, it never even crossed his mind as a possibility."
When recounting memories that were especially revealing of Jason Madachy's character, one especially resonated in his mother's mind.
"When he was a sophomore it was (his fraternity's) Mom's Weekend, and we were at Steinkeller's," Dolly Madachy said. "He loved that place. Jason got up in his chair and raised his glass and told everyone to quiet down. Jason waited until everyone in the entire bar became silent and screamed 'I love my mom!' But that was Jason. He wasn't shy or timid or embarrassed. Not many kids would do that."
Holding back tears, Dolly Madachy shared another story.
"We were at Steinkeller's again," Dolly Madachy said. "It was another parent's weekend, and Jason was a little older. He saw an older couple sitting in the corner and went and talked to them. When we were leaving they stopped me and his father and told us how great a kid he was. He even has a picture with them. He had a heart of gold."
Last year, Miami created the Jason Madachy Scholarship to be given to a junior or senior pre-med student with a 3.25 grade average or higher, a preference for Greek life and a strong interest in philanthropy.
Senior Jamie Kyriakedes, a member of Sigma Pi and friend of Jason, received the award and said he felt very honored.
"What Jason had was passion," Kyriakedes said. "A passion from academics to raising money for philanthropic (causes), to even being a leader in both a social and pre-medical fraternity. He loved to hang out with his good friends and lived life to its fullest, which in turn inspired those around him to do the same. I will be forever thankful to have known and been touched by Jason Madachy."
Miami has also planted a white dogwood tree near King Library in honor of Jason Madachy. The Madachy family chose a white dogwood because the white leaves symbolize a medical coat and when it blossoms it reaches upwards towards the sky as if it is reaching for the stars. Marshall University has planted a white dogwood of their own, and the medical students who would have been Jason's class at Marshall are currently working on a scholarship for him.
Katie Young, a long-time friend of Jason, said, "I don't think anyone can describe Jason in a few words. He was much more than that."
For those unable to attend the dinner Saturday, donations are accepted at http://www.jasonmadachyfoundation.org.
