Singer-songwriter Josh Kelley entertained a screaming crowd Friday evening on the back patio of Shriver.

Kelley headlined the 15th annual Party on the Patio hosted in collaboration with Miami University's AfterDark and Program Board.

"This place is awesome," Kelley said to the crowd.

He is most known for his hit song "Amazing" in 2003 and his marriage to Grey's Anatomy star Katherine Heigl in 2007.

"I liked it more than I expected; I felt like he was talking to us," first-year Alix Luttrell said.

The feeling seemed to be mutual for the crowd outside of Shriver. For many students, Friday's concert was their first AfterDark and Program Board event.

"I like it because it gets the whole campus together and gives us something else to do then just go uptown," said Derek Mahan, a first-year student.

"I think it's really cool of him to come to Miami and perform," first-year Emily Lehmann said.

Program Board Adviser Jeremy Bragg said Program Board reached around 30,000 students, staff, faculty and community members for the 2008-09 year.

Bragg said Program Board was founded in 1957 with the purpose of bringing students into the student center, now Shriver.

Program Board hosts annual events such as Redhawk Chef, Go Cart Grand Prix, Party on the Patio, pop culture and dating games and murder mysteries.

"For Party on the Patio, we work in collaboration with AfterDark," Bragg said.

Miami's AfterDark program is an alternative Friday night program, featuring non-alcoholic events.

AfterDark is a fairly new organization, founded in 1999 designed "to provide an alternative and safe Friday night fun for students on campus" according to Paige Houston, director of programming. AfterDark offers a variety of events including "pre-home release" movies at 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. "Star Trek" will be screened Friday, Sept. 25.

"AfterDark also features one big event once a month such as concerts, casino nights or magicians," Houston said.

Houston said both Program Board and AfterDark have started to see a strong following in fall 2009.

"It's good to see familiar faces week after week," Houston said.
