Steve and Missy Friede will be saying a bittersweet goodbye to the long-running Alexander House restaurant this fall when a new restaurant takes its place.
The Alexander House has been on the market periodically for the past three years. Just recently, during a quick two-week period, the restaurant was sold to Steve Jung. He plans on opening a new Japanese steakhouse called Sushi Nara in August.
Friede and his wife brought the Alexander House to life in 1999 after purchasing what used to be a five bedroom bed and breakfast.
"10 years is a long time and we had a good run," Friede said. "It wasn't meant to be forever. Oxford is changing."
Friede said there were three other times in the past the Alexander House was close to being sold.
Steele DePew, former head chef of the Alexander House, said he was surprised when the restaurant sold.
"I knew it was for sale the whole time I was there," DePew said. "I knew it might happen but there was no forewarning. I didn't think it would happen so quickly."
Friede said he's enjoyed his time running the Alexander House.
"We made tons of friends, had great success and the community is really supportive," Friede said.
He added the Alexander House staff will more than likely be hired at the new restaurant.
DePew, who has worked at the restaurant for the past four years, agreed the new changes could be exciting.
"It's kind of cool; I'm supposed to talk to the new owners soon," DePew said. "It's really up in the air, so I'm more nervous than excited right now."
Friede said he chose to sell the Alexander House because of the lifestyle and the amount of years he ran the restaurant. He and his wife hope to spend more time with their three children.
This isn't the end of the business world for the Friedes though. Friede co-owns SDS Pizza, along with the owners of Skipper's Pub. Friede will still be the property owner where the Alexander House was located.
DePew said there were quite a few employees that were upset because there was no warning of them losing their jobs.
Friede said during summer months the restaurant usually closes for a month because business slows.
"Timing wise this is sort of like an extended vacation for the workers and they'll be hired back in the fall," Friede said.
