Butler County taxpayers will see a decrease in real estate taxes in 2009, due to an expected surplus for a senior services levy.

The Butler County Board of Commissioners, which is made up of Charles R. Furmon, Gregory V. Jolivette, Donald L. Dixon, voted in early November to temporarily reduce real estate taxes countywide by reducing collections for the county's Elderly Services Levy by one-third.

According to Butler County Administrator Tim Williams, it was projected the levy would collect millions more dollars worth than expected in its current five-year lifespan set to end in 2010. By lowering collections, it is estimated Butler County citizens will save an approximate $5 million in taxes.

Williams said reducing collections on the levy will not hurt any programs currently in place for senior citizens.

"The fund will be reduced but not to a significant difficulty providing services for our senior citizens," Williams said. "I don't believe there will be any long-term consequences."

According to the Council on Aging of Southwestern Ohio, the levy supports programs such as "personal care, homemaker services, meals on wheels, transportation and respite/adult daycare." Additionally, the 2007 Butler County Elderly Services Annual Report said Butler County Citizens for Elderly Services, Inc. and its partners began a behavioral health pilot program.

The county's 2007 annual report said money for programs comes from federal funds provided through Title II of the Older Americans Act, co-payments from participants and donations, as well as local taxes.

Commissioners will reconvene and evaluate whether collections should be further reduced in October 2009.

For some in the Miami University community, the levy is viewed as a step in the right direction for senior citizens.
