Griffin House, a 2002 alumnus of Miami University, is returning to his alma mater and providing the party.

House, who is currently on tour, will be playing rock and roll at Brick Street Bar and Grill at midnight Thursday, Oct. 29.

A former resident of Collins Hall, House said he has many fond memories of Miami.

"I didn't even play guitar before I came to Miami," House said. "I sat in the stairwells and used to drive people nuts practicing all the time. I joined my first band there and made my first record, which I gave out my senior year."

Music became an unexpected passion during his time at Miami, as House had previously always considered himself to be a "sports guy."

"I always thought I was going to try and be a golf pro or do something with sports," House said. "Then I got here and tried zoology and international studies and settled on creative writing as a major. But my senior year I was so focused on my music that I completely slacked off."

Music has served House well ever since.

House is currently in the process of producing his sixth record, titled "The Learner," which draws its inspiration from life on the road.

"I just opened for Third Eye Blind in Atlanta and then I'm going out with The Cranberries, for one of their reunion tours," House said. "I also got to go out to a film festival in California and got to meet Clint Eastwood. It was pretty awesome."

Returning now to the place where his music began, House said he is anticipating changes and looking forward to a fun night.

"I know it's changed a lot, a lot of places aren't the same," House said. "My favorite coffee shop is long gone. I played back in Oxford once in 2004 but haven't been back since then."

House said it will be nostalgic for him to return to Brick Street.

"As for Brick Street, I don't know what to expect, because I used to play there all the time and that's where I started playing by myself," House said. "It'll be interesting to come back there and play and see if any of the students care."

House said he was once even kicked out of the bar for throwing a drink at the bartender who wouldn't give him any more free drinks.

As to whether or not students care, like House wondered, sophomore Lauren Morgan said she thinks now it is more important than ever to support Miami University alumni.

"It's not the kind of thing you'd expect to hear someone doing after they graduate," Morgan said. "But I really think we should show our support. It's a bad economic climate right now, and he's still managing to make a living, which is great."

Morgan said she would definitely consider attending the performance.

Griffin House will play at midnight Oct. 29. There will be cover charge at the door. For a sample of House's music, students can visit http://www.myspace.com/griffinhouse.
