1. Chunky Cuffs Add a chunky bracelet or a cuff to any outfit to spice it up. Sometimes fall colors can be bland but adding the right accessories can make all the difference. Adding a fresh, fashionable accessory can update any last season outfit.
2. Be bold Not only is the weather about to get gray in Oxford, but clothes start to get bland as well. This fall it is totally acceptable to add a neon headband, a bright purple sweater or rock some vibrant red pumps. Just because the weather gets dull, doesn't mean your wardrobe should, said Gina Mueller, Up fashion director.
"Nudes are really big this season, and bright bolds and coats are definitely big," Mueller said. "Everyone is trying to get out of the recession funk of the grayscale colors."
3. Get sassy Make your uptown outfit a little funky with some wild animal print. Don't go overboard though. Just add a belt here, headband there or maybe some shoes. Animal print can add some much needed spunk to a "just average" outfit. "You have to be careful not to cross the line from being stylish to being tacky," said Lauren Kreiser, Up managing editor.
4. Not just for your boyfriend Boyfriend jeans and boyfriend vests are not just for your boyfriend. Looser fitting clothes are definitely in. Add a girly belt and some cute accessories to make the outfit girl worthy. Muller said boyfriend jeans and a tight fitting shirt on top, or a skinny jean and the boyfriend vest would make a great combination. It's good to mix and match the skinny and loose fitting clothes.
5. Mix it up It's okay to mix silver and gold and brown and black.
"I was online reading an interview by Marc Jacobs, and he said one of his favorite color combinations is brown and black," Kreiser said. "I found it interesting because most people think you can't wear those together."
Don't be afraid to mix the two to stray away from wearing all one color. Mixing color includes layering tops, scarves and jackets.
6. Neat nails Pretty nails are a must to complete any outfit. Don't be afraid to branch out from the average dark browns or blacks.
"A deep red or a deep purple for fall is perfect because it looks good with neutrals," Kreiser said.
"Sea foam green, teal-ish color will be a hit for the fall," Mueller said.
7. For the boys Fall fashion is not all about the girls. Guys need to be on the look out for light-weight jackets, according to Mike Bloom, men's section editor. Bloom said it's all about the bomber and barracuda-style fit, which should rest right below the abdomen - teetering right on the edge of someone questioning if the jacket is too small, Bloom said. Also, guys should not be afraid to break out a scarf this season.
8. Take risks It's okay to take risks and express yourself. Maybe it's through fashion, art or writing, but whatever the outlet - be comfortable in your own skin. Step out of your comfort zone and try something new! You just never know what could look good on you, and it may be what you least expect.
