Senior cross country runner Pat Sovacool ended his illustrious career at Miami University with his best performance at the NCAA Championships.
Improving 70 places from his 135th place finish in the 2007 meet, Sovacool came in at 65th in the 2008 NCAA Division 1 national championship meet. His time of 30:35.8 clocked in just over 90 seconds behind overall winner Galen Rupp from the University of Oregon.
"I was really pleased," Sovacool said. "I knew All-America status (top 40) might have been out of my grasp, but my goal was to be twice as good as last year. It worked out almost exact."
Despite having plenty of past experience in big races, Sovacool said that his adrenaline ran high at the start of the meet.
"I wasn't able to relax until about the mile mark," Sovacool said. "But I found (Big 12 champion) German Fernandez of Oklahoma State and while I knew I couldn't match him entirely, I was able to settle into a good groove."
Sovacool placed 12th at the Great Lakes Regional three weeks ago but finished as the region's sixth best runner in the national championship.
"I am proud of Pat," head coach Warren Mandrell said. "He ran the race he wanted and put himself near All-America status. He finished ahead of everyone from Michigan, Penn State and UCLA, typically strong programs."
The performance caps a dominant career as a RedHawk for Sovacool.
He won his first MAC runner of the week award as a sophomore Sept. 26, 2006. To start that season, he posted three straight top-six overall finishes, including a pair of third-place finishes at the Flyer 5K Challenge and Miami Invitational.
Sovacool was named MAC runner of the week three times during his first-team all MAC junior year. Sports Illustrated featured him in its Oct. 22 edition of faces in the crowd. Sovacool helped Miami to a victory at the Dayton Flyer 5K challenge with a meet record time of 15:02. He also won the Great American Legends Race at Purdue University in 25:20 and the George Mason Invitational in 25:30.26.
In 2008 as a senior, Sovacool won three more MAC runner of the week awards, bringing his career tally to seven. He opened the season with wins in Miami's first three races, including his second straight Dayton Flyer 5K Challenge victory and a first-place finish in the University of Tennessee Invitational where he faced opponents from the SEC and ACC. A 12th place finish in the great lakes region meet earned him all-region honors from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Association, and a third place finish in the MAC championship earned him first-team all-conference honors for the second straight year.
Sovacool's cross country career at Miami is now over. He will suit up for the RedHawks in the spring for the tack and field season, another arena in which he owns an impressive history. Miami's first track and field event takes place February 13 with its only home meet coming April 11.
