The Miami University men's baseball team opened up MAC play Friday afternoon against conference foe Toledo. The Red and White came into the series after dropping a decision to Wright State March 17. They looked to regain their form after wining six of eight on their spring break trip to Orlando, Fla., with impressive wins over Army and Connecticut.
The series got underway Friday afternoon at Scott Stadium, where the RedHawks struggled to find their offense in a 2-0 loss to the Rockets. 'Hawk pitcher Matt Erwood picked up the loss after pitching seven innings, while only yielding one run.
The team hoped Saturday would be a different story for the RedHawks. After being shutout in Friday's game, the offense looked to improve as the series continued. The game looked promising at the beginning, when in the top of the first Zak Hatfield hit an RBI single to give Miami the early lead. Ryan Curl had a hot day at the plate going three for four, but the lead would not last, as Toledo scored in every inning except the first and sixth en route to an 11-6 victory over the RedHawks.
In the third and final game of the series, Miami fought but could not pull out the win in a 7-3 loss to Toledo. Miami tied the game at three in the top of the eighth but could not hold on as the Rockets scored four in the bottom of the frame to complete the sweep of the RedHawks.
Although the RedHawks have now lost four in a row, they are confident this weekend can teach them a lesson.
"I think it's a learning experience" senior infielder Jordan Petraitis said. "It is still early in the MAC season, and it is something that we are going to have to take from and draw from when we go into our league games this season."
Head coach Dan Simonds agreed with Petraitis.
"Well I think it is going to be important for us to learn that we have been playing pretty good baseball, but we can't take anything for granted at this point," Simonds said.
The RedHawks take a break from MAC play Tuesday and try to get back into the win column against a strong University of Cincinnati team.
"We played UC, and they have a good hitting ball club" Simonds said. "We have to be ready and do the little things right against a solid team like that. Hopefully we will get a solid pitching effort, and then get back to our winning ways."
After the quick stop at UC, the RedHawks return to Oxford to play the first game of the season at McKie Field. The RedHawks will take on Eastern Michigan University in their second MAC series of the season.
"It's always big to have a home series," Petraitis said. "It's great to be home and play in front of the home fans, and any time you get off the road it is great to be at home. Hopefully we will come out and give the fans something to see."
The Friday and Saturday games start at 6 p.m., while the Sunday game begins at 1 p.m.
