After breaking loose for the first victory of the season Sept. 11 against Central Michigan, the Miami University field hockey team (1-4) dropped their sticks in defeat Sunday following a hard fought 3-2 loss to the Northwestern University Wildcats (6-2).
The loss put a damper on an otherwise sunny day just days after the Red and White players left the field hockey complex smiling after claiming their first MAC win just a few days earlier.
"I think they were pretty geared up for the home game," head coach Jill Reeve said. "I feel like our experiences leading up to this have just been pent up in them. Their game as a team came out Friday and that was great. This home stretch was critical. We need to have a few wins to get our confidence up and that was a really important win."
The Wildcats wove their way through a tough RedHawk defense to draw first blood in Sunday's contest. RedHawk forward Mary Hull responded when she ran down the wet turf to beat the Northwestern goalkeeper and knot the game up at 1-1.
"In the past games we were lacking playing as a team and together," Hull said. "So today, we really tried to create a lot of two on ones and play better together and look for the easy pass to our teammate."
Hull made it look easy in both games this weekend. She also found the net later in the contest giving her a trio of goals this season.
After the Hull goal, the Wildcats clawed their way to the RedHawk net to score twice going into halftime. The RedHawk defense held strong in the final stanza, not allowing any more goals but the lone goal scored by Hull was obviously not enough for them to escape victorious.
"We were really excited for our first home game," Hull said. "Usually our first home game is the first weekend of our season. But this season we had to wait two weeks before our home games. It was also our first MAC game so we were extremely pumped up to play. We play Ball State, also in the MAC, so we are looking for two wins in the MAC before we go and play teams out of our conference."
The Ball State University Cardinals will come to Oxford next in a battle of the red birds to see if they can earn a victory in their first MAC game on Wednesday. The Red and White are the only team in the MAC with a conference victory.
"Overall, we have a ways to go," Reeve said. "We are performing at a pretty good level, but we have a lot of potential. We need to tap into that and make sure we are growing to become the best that we can."
