Miami University's men's cross country team was able to steal the show this weekend at the Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational in Chicago, claiming the title and beating out host school Loyola University Chicago, which finished second in the team standings.
The RedHawks placed five runners in the top 20 including senior Kevin Silver, who was the individual runner-up with a time of 24:58. The 8k race, which took place along Chicago's north shore, featured 39 teams and more than 400 runners.
Redshirt freshman David Eichenberger finished second for the RedHawks, his highest finish of the year, with a time of 25:36. There was just an eight-second spread between Miami's second through fifth finishers, which allowed Miami to run so well Saturday.
"We have a lot of depth and a lot of guys that run close to each other," Head Coach Warren Mandrell said. "The group flips around a lot, and there are at least seven or eight guys that can finish at the front of the pack for us."
Another key performance for the RedHawks came from senior Paul Krebs, who finished 14th overall and third for Miami.
"He was sick at our meet in New York and it was nice to have him back," Mandrell said.
Mandrell said the ultimate goal for the RedHawks in addition to winning the MAC Championship was "to try to make some noise at the national level."
Silver explained there are several upperclassmen on the team, which will be a great asset down the stretch for the RedHawks.
"We have four guys where this is their fourth or fifth year on the team, and it makes us feel more confident going into meets knowing that these guys have been there before," Silver said.
The RedHawks return to action in two weeks for the Pre-NCAA Invitational. Meanwhile, Miami University's women's cross country team finished second Friday at the All-Ohio Championship in Delaware, Ohio. The race was hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University and won by Ohio State University, who finished 18 points ahead of Miami.
Senior Kelsey McHugh finished ninth overall and lead the 'Hawks with a time of 18:55.2, while senior Amanda Mirochna finished less than a second behind her in 10th place.
"We want to win obviously, but it was a good race overall," Head Coach Kelly Phillips said.
Phillips, who is in her first season at Miami, said many people ran well and how it was an overall good performance.
"(Kelsey McHugh) is coming back to form," Phillips said, "And (Mirochna) also ran well."
Miami was able to finish ahead of the three other Mid-American Conference schools at the race, beating out Akron and Bowling Green. Phillips said the ultimate goal for the season was to repeat as MAC Champions, which the RedHawks accomplished for the first time in 2008. To do this, Miami will need strong performances from its key runners.
"We need to be more aggressive out front," Phillips said. "We will hammer some training out for the next two weeks to be prepared for the Pre-NCAA Invitational."
A top three finish at Regionals is the ultimate goal for the RedHawks, but for now they are focusing on their next race in two weeks at the Pre-NCAA Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind.
