Miami University Head Soccer Coach Bobby Kramig instructs his team at practice to play physical and to always use their heads. Junior Sara Lund took that literally when she beat the Ohio University Bobcat goalkeeper with hers Sunday, giving Miami (8-6-1, 4-3-1 Mid-American Conference) the 1-0 victory in double overtime.

"I thought we played well from start to finish," Kramig said. "It was a good complete effort. It was a good team effort. It was a wide-open game from end to end and both teams had chances. I'm not surprised the game went into overtime because I don't think either team established themselves as clearly better. It was about as even a game as you can ask for."

The score came with only three minutes remaining in the overtime and marked the Red and White's first victory in Athens in four years.

"Its definitely what we needed to do to get in the right direction," senior Kersta Carlson said. "We have had a very tough MAC season up until now. It set us up nicely for these next three games. Hopefully we can get three more wins. Going hard for 90 minutes won't cut it sometimes. Hard work all the way through the game and not just part way through will pay off nicely for us."

The Bobcats (7-6-2, 4-2-2 MAC) threatened early in the game, casting a shot intended for Krista Pace, but it was off target and went over the cross bar. The RedHawks came back with the same intention and had an identical result as Allison Berkey watched her own rip float away.

The Red and White defense held strong during the contest, with Pace voicing to her defense to keep the Bobcats contained.

RedHawk forward Jodi Zwingelberg put some pressure on the badgering Bobcat defenders but also couldn't find the net in consecutive tries. Her last try came with under a minute remaining but it had the same off target fate.

Neither team could connect when they put boot to ball and it resulted in the prolonged contest.

In the second stanza of overtime Pace came up strong again. She tipped a rebound over the goal and out of harms way to keep her RedHawks in the game.

The Red and White paid their keeper back for her strong effort when they earned a free kick. Berkey made a pass to the head of Lund and it soon found its mesh destination for the dramatic RedHawk triumph.

Pace's earned her fifth shutout this season with the performance.

"In the end our reserves and our bench were the difference in the game," Kramig said. "Any time you get into overtime that is an issue, with kids breaking down. Very strong performance from some of our better players, and Sara Lund was able to get the goal for us."

The Red and White return to Oxford Friday for a three-game stretch. They will meet at 3 p.m. midfield against Western Michigan University.
