Both the Miami University men's and women's swim teams splashed by the Xavier University Musketeers Saturday. The men's team finished with a 143.5-115.5 win before hitting the showers while the girls won 147.5-114.5 after sending 14 swimmers and four divers to Louisville where they fell to the University of Louisville Cardinals 164-130.
"We swam against two very good teams," Miami Head Coach Dave Jennings said. "Louisville is a top-25 team so we had our challenges down there. I thought we swam pretty well. Obviously the scoreboard didn't indicate that as far as winning and losing is concerned, but we had a number of our women that did a really nice job."
The Red and White hit chlorine and were challenged early on by the visiting Musketeers before sophomore Lauren Wallace touched the wall and knotted up the score at 19-19. The 1,000-yard freestyle victory was Wallace's first as a RedHawk as she was clocked at 11:01.83.
Wallace wasn't the only one making waves.
In the next event freshmen Molly Tyler swam to her first win as a RedHawk in the 200-yard freestyle, giving her squad the edge with her 1:57.73 time.
"Overall we had a pretty good meet," Jennings said. "We are very young and there are a lot of things we need to teach. We lost nine seniors from last year that were a big cornerstone of our program but I think certainly we have great seniors this year. I think it's good that we got the competition underway."
Jennings' young squad had a scare after the Musketeers sliced the lead down to 48-47. The Red and White gained some insurance when sophomore Kelsey Mallon and junior
Taylor Koplow jumped in the pool for the 200-yard butterfly. The dangerous duo took gold and silver in the race with times of 2:09.92 and 2:10.15 respectively.
"We had some really good swims," senior Allison Way said. "A lot of our freshmen really stepped it up over the weekend."
One of the fast freshman was Stacie Clagg who swam to a tie in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:25:83.
"It was a really close race and it was really fun to watch," Way said. "It was a very exciting race."
Clagg also took second place honors in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 400-yard IM. Freshman Brittney Rohr pocketed a win, her first as a RedHawk when she touched first in the 200-yard butterfly.
The freshmen stepped up big in the absence of some the RedHawk's strongest swimmers who were racing in Kentucky. Senior Kasey Carpenter and freshman Maegan O'Connor swam to wins in the 200-yard backstroke and the 200-yard butterfly.
"After sending those girls to Louisville and still being able to beat Xavier was just a really good feeling overall," Way said. "One of our strengths is our freshmen class because that is about half of our team. They are excited and new and fresh ready to start. This year we are all such good friends. We are all like and family and like best friends who all come together under pressure. When we need to perform, we all come together and perform."
Sophomore Chris Gunnels and senior Michael Carroll led the RedHawk men on the weekend, with each claiming to victories.
Way and her friends will jump into MAC competition at 4 p.m. Friday facing the University at Buffalo Bulls. The RedHawk men will travel to West Lafayette to take on the Boilermakers of Purdue University at 5 p.m. Friday.
