One more chance for RedHawks

Back before singer Michael Jackson became the weird, cartoon-like figure most people of this generation know him as, his band, The Jackson 5, reached No. 1 in 1969 with their song "I Want You Back." In the song, the Jacksons sing, "Oh baby give me one more chance. Won't you let me back in your heart?"

Forty years later, the Miami University hockey team is singing a similar tune.

When the brotherhood lost its playoff series at home to the Northern Michigan Wildcats in mid-March, most RedHawk fans left Goggin Arena depressed and disappointed. Miami squandered its one-game lead in the best-of-three series and left their NCAA Tournament destiny in the hands of other teams. Usually, this does not lead to pleasant outcomes. Even more so, most Miami fans, including myself, did not believe the RedHawks belonged in the NCAA Tournament. We had long forgotten the No. 2 national ranking the hockey team achieved in December and how they swept the current No.1 and CCHA champion Notre Dame Fighting Irish to get there. Instead, fans pointed to injuries and inexperience as reasons for Miami's struggles in the second half of the season.

Despite their hardships, the RedHawks received some good luck when their bubble did not burst on Selection Sunday. Miami received a No. 4 seed in the 16-team NCAA Tournament and will play No. 1 seed University of Denver in Minneapolis. Is this the dream scenario RedHawk fans envisioned when the season began? Probably not. I am sure most fans wanted Miami to be riding high on momentum after a great second half of the season and a CCHA Tournament Championship. But while those achievements are great, one fact still remains: Miami made it to hockey's Big Dance, and that's all that matters.

Whether a team sustains success all season long like last year's Miami squad or has periods of ups and downs like this year's RedHawks, getting to the NCAA Tournament is what it is all about. Once a team gets to the Big Dance, anything can happen.

A perfect example of this occurred last week in the NCAA Basketball Tournament.

The University of Arizona Wildcats could not have finished their season any worse. They lost five of their final six games, including their first game in the Pac-10 tournament. Much like Miami hockey, they found themselves on the tournament bubble, with no room to complain if their name was not called on Selection Sunday. However, the Wildcats made it to the NCAA Tournament and have not stopped dancing yet. As a No. 12 seed, they upset No. 5 Utah in the first round. In the second round, they punched their ticket to the Sweet 16, defeating No. 13 Cleveland State and now await a matchup with No. 1 Louisville. You may have correctly predicted this within your bracket but, not surprising to some people, I did not. I saw a team that struggled to end the season and did not believe they could put it together to pull off a victory under the bright lights of the national stage. They proved me wrong.

And prove everyone wrong is exactly what the Miami RedHawks must do. They must look at the Arizona Wildcats and see just because a team doesn't make the tournament on a high note, this does not mean they cannot have success. As RedHawk fans, we must believe and realize this team can win a championship this year. Four wins is all it takes.

Despite not entering the NCAA Tournament with the same excitement and expectations that went along with last season, the Miami RedHawks have arrived at hockey's Big Dance. The puck drops at 5:30 p.m. Friday and can be seen on ESPN2. Won't you give them one more chance?
