The RedHawks defend their title as MAC volleyball tournament champions this weekend in Toledo, Ohio.
Miami University's volleyball team, led by seniors Emily Schroeder, Melissa Zenz and Catherine Wolfe, earned a first-round bye and the No. 3 seed for the upcoming conference tournament with a 12-4 season in league play. Now, the team focuses on returning to the NCAA tournament by winning a second consecutive MAC tournament.
"We have been there before and we know what it takes to win," said Wolfe, who was named to the 2007 MAC All-Tournament team.
The defending tournament champions face the No. 6 seeded Huskies from Northern Illinois University in the quarterfinals Friday. NIU defeated Kent State University in five sets during Tuesday's opening round match after trailing 2-1.
In Miami's only meeting with Northern Illinois this year, the RedHawks lost the opening set by a mere two points, only to finish off the Huskies by taking the next three in succession with a combined point total of 75-44.
Despite the 'Hawks past success, Miami head coach Carolyn Condit is not taking the Huskies lightly.
"NIU has strong outside hitters who pound the ball," Condit said. "Strong blocks will be key to our success."
A potential semifinal matchup with archrival Ohio University looms for Miami if the team should defeat NIU. The No. 2 seeded Bobcats enter the tournament as MAC East regular season champions. Miami and OU split their two meetings during the regular season.
Western Michigan University comes in as the favorite No. 1 seed with a 23-4 overall record and only two MAC losses. The Broncos defeated the 'Hawks in Kalamozoo, Mich. 3-1 in Miami's second conference game of the season.
Miami must not dwell on potential championship opponents, however, or overlook current aggressors. Anything can happen in a short conference tournament and the RedHawks need to rely on their strengths.
Experience is an advantage in every sport and the RedHawks have plenty. Similar to this weekend, Miami entered the 2007 tournament as the No. 3 seed and knows exactly what must be done to win the crown.
Zenz looks to add to her record-breaking dig total and 2007 First Team All-MAC junior middle hitter Megan Griffin looks to contribute a double-figure kill total Friday against the Huskies.
Wolfe went onto say that communication, both on and off the court, has been another large factor that contributed to their success. Condit echoed this sentiment and said teamwork will be what puts her team through to the finish.
"Our passing game has remained strong this season, and should help carry us this post season," Condit said.
Miami's season began with the Redhawks compiling a 6-6 record through the first four tournaments, which included a first-place finish in the UNLV tournament in Las Vegas, entailing an impressive win over Big Ten foe University of Wisconsin. Miami carried a six-game win streak before running into a dangerous and talented field in the Dayton tournament, where they lost three games in a row by a combined score of 9-2.
The RedHawks returned to their winning ways as they began conference play, opening the season with a convincing 3-1 home victory over Bowling Green State University. After a loss to Western Michigan, Miami ripped off a seven-game win streak. Miami shut out all but two opponents during the streak, leaving them with an 8-1 record in conference play.
The RedHawks suffered their first home loss of the year in a close match against Ball State University Oct. 25th and lost at Bowling Green five days later. They followed that up with a victory over Northern Illinois in Oxford Nov. 1.
"We had a great blocking game against NIU in our first matchup this year," Megan Griffin said. "We have been working on off-speed strategies in practice to really mix it up on offense."
After losing at Ohio the next week, the Redhawks closed out the regular season with three straight dominating shutout victories over Kent State, University of Akron and University at Buffalo to finish with an overall record of 18-10 and 12-4 in MAC play.
Miami carries its three-game win streak into the post-season. The quarterfinal match tips at 1:30 p.m. in Toledo's Seagate Center. Semifinal matches will be played Saturday with the champion being crowned Sunday.
