On what was unofficially dubbed "Angie Gerber Day," the senior first baseman came through to lead the Miami softball team to an 8-0 win over the University of Toledo. The win on Saturday completed a three-game sweep for the RedHawks, their third this year in Mid-American Conference competition. The Red and White took game one of Saturday's doubleheader, 5-0, as well as game two, 5-1. Gerber, the lone senior on this year's squad and the MAC Player of the Week, was honored before the game, with her parents and grandparents in attendance. In the final home game of her career, she did not disappoint, going 2-for-2 with a home run and a double, notching five RBIs. "I don't think I've coached a player who has a bigger heart and determination and desire to lead and be a team player," Miami head coach Angie Jacobs said. "I think she's the epitome of a team player. She has done nothing but lead by example this year. I believe that she is the main reason, if not the reason, that Miami softball has pretty much come full circle in these last four years." In the bottom of the first inning, with two runners on, Gerber hit a towering shot to center field to add to Miami's 1-0 lead. "It felt really amazing. I have so many people here to support me, and I didn't feel pressure to hit well," Gerber said. "I just felt really good and excited, and I was able to stand up there and see a good pitch. I've been seeing the ball well, and I was able to capitalize on that." Miami tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the second, and Gerber's two-run double in the fourth sealed the deal for the 'Hawks. After earning an eight-run lead by the fifth inning, the game was called due to the mercy rule. Earning the win for Miami was sophomore Jackie Poggendorf, improving her record to 8-10. Poggendorf, last week MAC East Pitcher of the Week, scattered three hits and recorded three strike outs in four innings of work. The sweep marked the first time that Miami has swept three different opponents in a season. "They worked so hard in the fall. When you get just a little bit of confidence, it goes a long ways, and that's what's happening right now," Jacobs said. "If we're peaking, then this is a hell of a time to peak, because as a coach, we're right where you want that to happen." With Miami's current eight-game win streak, the team is currently in position to be the No. 6 seed in the MAC tournament. Jacobs believes that while nothing is definite, the team has a good chance of making the tournament. "The good thing about our position right now is that we have our destinies in our hands," Jacobs said. "We need to come out and stay focused, stay confident and take care of each game one at a time. If we continue to do that with our next six games, then I'm confident that we'll be where we need to be, and that's in the tournament." Although Sunday did mark Gerber's last home game as a RedHawk, the senior is not yet worrying about her post-softball career. "I feel like I'm ready to move on, but I know that as soon as I leave that I'm going to miss it a lot. Just coming out and playing ball everyday is what I love to do. I'm going to miss that more than anything," Gerber said. The RedHawks travel to the University at Buffalo for a three-game series next weekend.
