One challenge for Miami University club sports teams is garnering the attention that varsity sports capture. The Miami men's club soccer team is an exception, as they have no varsity spotlight cast over them. This talented group of men is THE Miami men's soccer team, and they raise their expectations for one another every time they play while embracing their freedom as "free agents."

This year's team is one that stands out above the rest under the leadership of Devon Leary, Tom Ciuni and Matt Connolly, team presidents for the fall 2009 season. All three have been on the team since freshman year (Leary and Ciuni for four years, Connolly three), and by now they have mastered the balance between playing a sport at a highly competitive level and enjoying the non-academic values of college.

"We get the best of both worlds, enjoying the sport we love and the college life that we love just as much," Leary said.

This attitude has allowed the team to bond both on the field and off.

Junior Kevin Doman joined the team his freshman year.

"It took a bit of time to get to know everybody but you spend so much time practicing and traveling that all of a sudden it comes together," Doman said.

Another group that the team has come to value is their fan base.

Senior David Gedeon is the leader of Soccer Hooligans, the Miami club soccer fan group.

"Watching my fellow Miami colleagues beat 'Wright State, wrong school,' last year was extremely satisfying," Gedeon said. "As a fan of the game, I look forward to the upcoming season. Leary, Ciuni, Connolly and company are ready to get back on the top, and I believe they can achieve, great things as a unit.

Go 'Hawks!"

The 2009 tryouts also provided positive outlook for upcoming years as approximately 75 students tried out for a limited number of spots. Leary said they looked for men that can juggle the challenge of working hard for a team without the responsibility that often comes when playing for a varsity team.

The season kicks off Saturday as the team travels to Ball State. The first home game will be at 3 p.m. Sept. 26 against Western Michigan at the Club Sports Field across from Ditmer Parking Lot.

The Miami men's club soccer team is sure to be one to keep an eye on as they rise to the top. Miami students: embrace club soccer, become a Soccer Hooligan (Dave Gedeon is accepting applications) and be sure to get your club on!
