Senior forward Michael Bramos put up 34 points against Kent State on Sunday.

The Madness has arrived. On Sunday, March 1, the Miami University men's basketball team (16-11, 9-5) began its March campaign with a 68-63 triumph over the Kent State University Golden Flashes (16-13, 8-6). The slim victory halted a three game losing skid by the Red and White.

In the midst of a chilling breeze outside of Millett Hall, forward Michael Bramos had the hot hand. After being held to under 20 points for the last five contests, Bramos erupted for 34 points to the joy of the RedHawk faithful.

"I hate to be hardcore, but it's time," head coach Charlie Coles said. "I'm expecting more of this. More of this Mike! Seniors are supposed to go out in a blaze of glory. I want more of this. I thought that was great. Maybe he can't come up with that kind of night again, but he can come up with a night. When Mike's making shots it helps our whole team. Tonight he was very good."

Senior Tyler Dierkers added yet another double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Sophomore Antonio Ballard rounded out Miami's "big three" with 12 points. Senior Carl Richburg did a superb job of quarterbacking the attack, dishing out a career best nine assists with only two turnovers.

"This is about as big of game as we have had," Bramos said. "We've got our backs against the wall losing three straight. This was a big win. Our whole team made plays down the stretch. This was probably the biggest win of the year for us."

The finale of this fantastic contest had the feeling of two heavyweight fighters going blow for blow. Finally, with four minutes remaining and Miami down by one, Bramos landed his knock out punch. The senior drained a clutch three and cashed in from the paint to score five unanswered points and put Coach Coles' entourage up 61-57. Unlikely sharpshooter Dierkers put the nail in the coffin by hammering in a three with less than two minutes remaining.

"Carl penetrated, and he got me a wide-open look," Dierkers said. "I think he finished with nine assists. I was just confident. He hit me on the wing, I stepped into my shot, and it went in. Everyone has to make plays. Mike carried us the whole game with his scoring. I felt really good about our matchups."

The first half saw an array of lead changes and ties, but with six minutes remaining the RedHawks set the tone for a classic game. Sophomore Nick Winbush got all net on his attempt from downtown and tied the game at 19-19. The trey by Winbush was followed on the other end by a glass-shattering block by junior big man Adam Fletcher.

The Miami defense proved bothersome for 2008 Mid-American Conference Player of the Year Al Fisher. The leader of the Golden Flash attack was held to eight points. Fisher wasn't much of a factor in the game because of foul trouble and the fact he only clocked in for 20 minutes. Tyree Evans, 15 points, and Jordan Mincy, 14 points, led the Flashes in a game that was tied 13 times and saw seven lead changes.

"We're so happy to win that game; we've had a rough time of it lately," Coach Coles said. "It's good to win because it lifts morale and these guys have worked awful hard this season. It's good to see them get that victory."

Thursday, March 5 will mark the last home game of the 2008-09 season for the Red and White against the Bowling Green State University Falcons. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
