What a weekend! Opening week for the NFL and the second week of college football, our beloved Bengals, Browns, Buckeyes and RedHawks all lost in epic fashion.
The Bengals and Buckeyes both lost in the most heartbreaking of manners. The Bucks executed perfect Tressel-ball Saturday night. Minimal offense, shut down
defense and conservative play calling. I thought I may actually witness a miracle that night (Yes, I was in attendance. Why I didn't sell my ticket is beyond me?) until the last few minutes of the fourth quarter when the Trojans became the Men of Troy again and put the Buckeyes in a familiar place they've been the last few years. The Silver Bullets lost their sixth straight game against a top-five foe. Fans are beginning to call for Tressel's head as all is not well in C-Bus.
The Bengals meanwhile have started to earn back the "Bungles" nickname. The defense played fairly well Sunday limiting the high-powered Broncos offense to only six points, which kept the game close. Then Bengals running back Cedric Benson ran in a late touchdown to put the Bengals up 7-6, and it looked as if Cincy was going to start Week One off with a W and great momentum for the 2009 season. However the Broncos ended up making a play rivaling the Immaculate Reception and Music City Miracle. Kyle Orton in his first game as a Bronco threw a pass that was tipped by Bengals' CB Leon Hall into the hands of a wide open Brandon Stokley who took it 87 yards (ironic that that is one more yard than USC's final drive) and into the end zone for a touchdown. 12-7 Broncos win.
The Browns provided a slight bright spot for Ohio teams this weekend, hanging with the Vikings and containing Brett Favre fairly well for the most of the game. But in the second half the Vikings went to their young guns in Percy Harvin and Adrian Peterson (by the way anyone else creeped out by his new Nike ad? Youtube.com it.) and dismantled the Brownies 34-20. Brady Quinn didn't play terribly, throwing both a touchdown and interception, but was sacked five times as the Browns fell to 1-10 in season openers since 1999.
And finally we come to our dearest RedHawks. New coach. New uniforms. Starting to look like the same result as past seasons for the Red and White, maybe even worse. The football team has yet to score a single point this season! They missed their only scoring chance in the UK game missing a 34-yard field goal wide left. Then against Boise State, Miami quarterbacks threw four interceptions, and the offense again failed to register a point. They only crossed into Boise territory three times all game! The direction Coach Haywood has the team going is scary. I mean I didn't think it could get much worse after last season, but maybe it can. Miami has been making regular appearances in ESPN.com's Bottom 10 since 2007. When will the bleeding stop? Are we not the program that once produced coaches by the name of Schembechler, Parseghian, Ewbank and Brown? Are we now to be the new graveyard of coaches, much like Ohio State was before Woody arrived? At this pace the economy may have a better chance of recovering before 'Hawk football does. Is it too late for us to join the FCS?
When will Ohio learn?! The times are a changing. We cannot keep doing what has been done in the past. Go back to the drawing board and figure out new game plans. Jim, bring in an offensive guru and stop calling plays. Mike Brown, give up ownership of the team or at least hire a GM. Your father is rolling in his grave. Eric, please develop a game plan that can make the team win more than five games in a season. Coach Haywood, start recruiting higher caliber players so we can actually field a competitive team and not embarrass ourselves every week. Thank God, the Brotherhood's and Cavs' seasons are almost here. We're only a few weeks into football season, and already I'm begging for the bleeding to stop.
