Name- Kelly Cabana Sport- Softball Hometown- Irvine, Calif.
Katie Giovinale (KG)- When did you first start playing softball?
Kelly Cabana (KC)- My parents always say that I went to my first softball game when I was five days old. My dad still plays slow pitch. He got me started when I was five. When I was nine I started playing travel ball.
KG- What were some honors you received in high school?
KC- I was the female athlete of the year in Irvine, CIF champion, and I was the athlete of the week numerous times. I also played golf.
KG- Any awards for golf?
KC- I was awarded the best irons player, number one on my team and the captain for both softball and golf.
KG- How has being the captain for Miami University softball changed you as a player?
KC- It makes me more aware of the team as a whole; I have to make sure everyone is on the same page. It's inspiring being older to see the younger girls grow as players and people.
KG- What position do you play?
KC- I pitched my first two years at Miami, but I had stress fractures twice in my feet so I called it quits and now I play first base.
KG- What's the most challenging part of playing first base?
KC- You're involved in almost every play.
KG- How did you decide to come to Miami?
KC- I came on a recruiting trip and fell in love the moment I got on campus with the school and the team.
KG- What's your favorite part about Miami?
KC- Probably the great professors. Being pre-med and an athlete, they were very understanding with traveling. I never had a bad experience with a professor.
KG- What are your post-graduation plans?
KC- I'm attending medical school at Touro University in Vallejo, Calif.
KG- What area of medicine would you like to practice?
KC- I'm all over the map right now. I've thought about dermatology, geriatrics, orthopedic surgery-I want to go and explore and then fall in love with something.
KG- What do you like to do when you find some spare time?
KC- I love to bake. I started my own cooking business here at school. I also love yoga and anything creative or artistic.
KG- Tell me about this cooking business.
KC- I sold warm chocolate chip cookies late night in front of Brick Street Bar. I used Brick Street's ovens and sold them between midnight and 2 a.m. I did it while I was on crutches recovering from my surgery for the stress fractures. I had two pins placed in my foot. Some people still know me as the cookie girl. I called it the Cookie Cabana.
KG- Do you have any pregame rituals?
KC- Putting on my sunscreen and chapstick-the two things I can't live without. I'm sunscreen obsessed.
KG- Do you have any advice for the freshmen and future Miami softball players?
KC- Always strive to be well-rounded and to realize that time flies, especially when you're at Miami, and don't forget the sunscreen!
