Sport: Softball Hometown: Marion, Ark. Year: Freshman

Katie Giovinale: When was the first time you picked up a bat and knew that you wanted to play softball?

Jordan McElroy: When I was 4 years old my dad would always play catch and pitch to me in the front yard. I started on an all boys team when I was 5 years old, and I haven't stopped playing since. I didn't decide until going into my junior year of high school that I wanted to play softball in college. I always loved basketball the best.

KG: What position do you play for Miami University?

JM: I play right field and some center field.

KG: Have you always played that position?

JM: No, I have always played center field until I got here and also spent time playing third base in high school.

KG: What's your favorite part of the game?

JM: Making the game changing play and, of course, winning.

KG: What's the biggest challenge of the game for you?

JM: I have always played with my emotions on my sleeves, and for me to keep it inside when I play is a tough thing for me.

KG: How have you improved as a player since coming to Miami?

JM: I believe maturity has been my biggest step up since the beginning of the season. Also learning how to push myself even when things get tough in practice (conditioning and 7 a.m. lifts).

KG: How did you choose to come to Miami?

JM: At first when being recruited by Miami I had never heard of the school. I thought I was going to Florida for college, but then I decided to come on a visit. This was my first school seeing, and I fell in love with the campus and the team. I knew right then this was the right place for me.

KG: Favorite softball memory with the Miami team?

JM: Completing boot camp from Christmas break.

KG: Favorite part about Miami?

JM: There's not just one part I love. Everything about it makes me feel at home.

KG: What honors and awards did you receive for softball in high school?

JM: Sophomore Year: All-Conference, All-State tournament team, 4A State Championship; Junior Year: All-Conference, All-State, All-Metro, All-Arkansas, Team Captain, Highest Team Batting Average .424, Most stolen bases 20 for 22, State Runners-up; Senior Year: All-Conference, All-State, All-Arkansas, All-Metro Player of the Year Finalist, Team Captain, Most stolen Bases 23 for 23, Highest Team batting average .484 on base percentage, .595, State Runners-Up.

KG: What do you like to do besides play softball?

JM: Eating, sleeping, and since I'm from the south, being outside all the time riding four wheelers and laying by the pool.

KG: What's your major?

JM: Health education.

KG: What do you plan to do with your major?

JM: I want to become a high school teacher and also coach - either softball, basketball or volleyball.

KG: Any pregame rituals or superstitions?

JM: I always wear a red polka dot ribbon in my hair for games. Also before every at bat, I re-tie my right shoe string, and if I get a hit with it then I won't touch it until the end of the game. Before games I listen to music and dance with my roommate, Dani, who is also on the softball team.

KG: Best advice you've ever been given?

JM: Not everyone has the chance to be in your situation, take the opportunity and run with it because at the end of the day you should have no regrets. And also be the player you have always been; don't let others try to change you.
