Senior forward Jaclyn Leininger is a former Miss Basketball of Indiana and was named MVP of the Hall of Fame Classic in Indiana during her senior season in high school.

Name: Jaclyn Leininger Sport: Basketball Hometown: Warsaw, Indiana

Katie Giovinale (KG): How did you first become interested in basketball?

Jaclyn Leininger (JL): I started when I was little. I played with my two older brothers and my dad ever since I can remember out on our driveway. I was always competing with my brothers.

KG: When did you play on your first competitive team?

JL: In first grade I played on a YMCA team with all boys. In fourth grade my elementary school team went to the city championships-basketball is pretty big in Indiana-and the game was televised. After that I really became known as a basketball player and really got serious about it.

KG: What were some of your high school accomplishments?

JL: My senior year we were the state runner up. We also won the Hall of Fame Classic in Indiana. We were conference champions my sophomore through my senior year. Individually I was Miss Basketball of Indiana my senior year and I was the MVP of the Hall of Fame Classic and all-conference player of the year.

KG: How did you decide on Miami?

JL: I got recruited by Maria (Fantanarosa); she took me all over campus on my visit and I felt like I would fit in so well with the players and coaches. I loved the campus and academically it's so prestigious.

KG: What are some of your accomplishments at Miami?

JL: We won the MAC last year and we had our first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. My sophomore year I was the MVP of the St. Louis Tournament. Recently we won the Colorado Air Force Tournament and I made the all-tournament team.

KG: How did last year's injury affect you?

JL: It made me appreciate being on the court. It made me work harder every day because you don't know when it'll be your last. I definitely came back stronger mentally.

KG: What are some of your goals for the season?

JL: We want to win the MAC then the tournament and get into the NCAA Tournament. We don't just want to get into the NCAA Tournament but we really want to compete in it and beat some teams.

KG: What's your major?

JL: Middle Childhood Education with a concentration in Social Studies and Language Arts.

KG: What's your plan after graduation?

JL: I'm getting married in August, and I'll be looking for a teaching position and maybe getting into coaching.

KG: What do you like to do in your free time?

JL: I like to hang out with my fiancé and my teammates; we love playing cards. I love tennis too-in the summer I'm always on the lake. This past summer I life guarded and taught swim lessons at a private outdoor camp.

KG: What are you looking forward to this season?

JL: I'm looking forward to getting into the MAC season. We have a different team this season; I feel like we really have talent and I can't wait to compete against other MAC schools.
