For many athletes around the country, the options for playing varsity sports are few and far between. Yet as colleges expand, so do their opportunities to get involved, causing the club sport realm to reach new heights.
Specifically speaking, Miami is home to 44 club sports teams ranging from both men and women's rugby teams to synchronized swimming.
Mike Arnos, club sports director and sole adviser to the teams, spent some time giving a full run down on the "underground" club scene at Miami.
As Arnos said, Miami's first club teams consisted of synchronized swimming and ice-skating, which were founded in September 1953. Since those teams were created the national rate of students involved in club sports has skyrocketed. As reported in December 2008 by The New York Times, "an estimated 2 million college students play competitive club sports compared with about 430,000 involved in athletics governed by the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics."
What is most amazing about club sports at Miami is that all of them are run by students, meaning club presidents are on their own to schedule games, figure out transportation and hotels, collect dues, organize team fundraisers and find a faculty adviser. Most teams are able to excel and although the records vary, the number of teams has remained stable at 40 to 45 each year. Each team has been able to maintain their own system of recruiting members. Some offer tryouts with cuts, some have A and B teams, some do not have any cuts and others offer a competitive group and an open forum.
Club sports teams have also come to attract multi-faceted students whose involvement on campus is spread among various organizations. One aspect that has come to define club sports athletes is their "love for the game" attitude, in regards to their previous off-the-radar achievements.
Arnos explained that each sport has its own mini community and truly support one another on and off the field. Since he started in 2001, there have been six national championships, and teams have been able to touch ground on at least 35 out of the 50 states that make up the United States.

This year is sure to be the year of the club sports as they will go from the "underground" scene to the VIP list of any sports fanatic. Miami students stay tuned and be sure to get your club on!
