A four-game sweep of the University at Buffalo not only runs the Miami baseball team's winning streak to seven, but it also gives the RedHawks nine Mid-American Conference wins. The four victories also give Miami 11 straight wins against Buffalo. "We go into these MAC weekends with a lot of confidence knowing we have seen a lot of great pitching," senior Michael Carlin said. "We are prepared for anything now." The RedHawks (21-16-1, 9-3 MAC) scored 49 runs in four games against the Bulls, capped off by a 19-7 win on Sunday when Carlin hit his 39th career home run, setting a new Miami record. "It is a great honor. There are some unbelievable players on that list," Carlin said. "I am glad that I was able to make that list and help the team win some games." The Red and White had a fast start in the first game of the series, played Friday, scoring all 12 of their runs by the sixth inning. Carlin, fellow seniors David Cook and Zach Schmidt, and sophomore Brian Canada cleared the fence for Miami, combining to drive in half of Miami's runs. Freshman Sam Shorts earned the win for the 'Hawks, improving his record to 3-2. In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, freshman hurler Matt Long went five innings for the RedHawks, scattering four hits and striking out four, earning his first win for the Red and White. The RedHawk bats stayed hot in the 9-1 win as Cook led the way with a three-RBI homer in a five-run fourth inning for Miami. Miami scored nine runs again in the nightcap of the twinbill, winning 9-5. The Bulls got on the board first in the second game, notching one run against starting freshman southpaw Graham Taylor, putting the RedHawks behind for the first time in the weekend series. Taylor went 8 2/3 innings for Miami, scattering nine hits and retiring eight consecutive batters at one point. "I am really happy with the way that I am throwing," Taylor said. "Stepping in as a freshman and throwing well and getting the job done. Coach (Tracy Smith) is happy with me, and hopefully I can continue to do well." Canada got Miami on the board in the second inning, hitting a two-run home run to center field. Buffalo scored one run in both the sixth and seventh innings, taking a 3-2 lead, but again, the 'Hawks responded. "It's great going out onto the mound knowing we are going to come out and score 5, 6, 7 runs," Taylor said "Hopefully, I won't make any mistakes, but if I do, I know we will score more than them." Sophomore Tyler Tabler led off the inning for Miami with a single, later scoring all the way from first on a Carlin double. Sophomore John Slone scored Carlin with an RBI single, giving the Red and White a one-run lead. The Bulls refused to go quietly, scoring an unearned run off of Taylor to send the game to extra innings. A five-run 10th was all redshirt junior Adam Keel needed to hold off Buffalo, which scored one run in the bottom of the inning. Miami closed out the four-game series on Sunday, scoring 12 runs in the first four innings en route to a 19-7 win. Five runs in the seventh inning, including Carlin's record-setting home run, and two more in the ninth capped off the weekend for the Red and White. Freshman Jason Friedman, last week's MAC East Division Player of the Week, earned the win for Miami, improving his record to 4-0. The 'Hawks return home Wednesday to face Indiana University in a game that will begin the stretch run of the season. "We are going to be the team that is going to be chased," Carlin said. "I think that we are going to stay on top because we are playing our best baseball, and we are definitely the team to be chased right now."
