All sports worthy of school pride

With all of the praise of our top ranked hockey team (rightfully so), and all of the criticism of the football program, there are some great teams at Miami University that get overlooked.

As we come upon Homecoming weekend, let us not forget the other less publicized sports at Miami. The athletes in these sports work just as hard and are deserving of credit as well.

For instance, the women's swimming and diving team captured the MAC Championship last season. The program has had a streak of four consecutive MAC titles from 2002 to 2005. This year the Red and White return talented swimmers such as junior Kelsey Vehr who was named Miami Female Co-Athlete of the Year and First Team All-MAC one year ago. She also holds school and conference records in the 100 and 200 breaststroke.

Along side of Vehr, fellow junior Megan Brunn was a Second Team All-MAC swimmer in 2008-09. As talented as this group is, there is no doubt Head Coach Dave Jennings will have them competing for another MAC crown in 2009-10.

The women's swimming and diving team opens up its season Friday with a meet against Purdue and host a split squad meet with Xavier Saturday. Both are at the Nixon Aquatic Center.

On the men's side, the swimming and diving team is already under way. They are 1-1 on the year after beating Evansville and falling to Southern Illinois. In the loss to Southern Illinois, sophomore James Beres won the two- and three-meter diving events. Senior David Brown took top place in the 100-yard freestyle.

The men's team will finally have its first home meet against Xavier Saturday.

At the other end of campus, the field hockey team has compiled a 5-2 record in the MAC and a 9-8 record overall. Good enough for a tie for second place in the conference with Ohio. The field hockey team completed its home schedule this past weekend by dropping a heartbreaker 3-2 to Michigan. The team will finish the year with three games on the road before the MAC tournament begins in two weeks.

One of the highlights of the year was a 5-1 pasting of then No. 17 Indiana. Senior Mary Hull leads the team with 11 goals on the year. Senior Katie Brightwell is the leader on the team in assists with 11. It was Hull who scored the game winner Oct. 16 to beat California 2-1 in overtime. This is a team who just two years ago was the MAC tournament runner-up to Ohio and ranked as semi-finalists last season. Look for this team to go deep into the MAC tournament this year.

The women's volleyball team is also enjoying success with a 6-2 conference record and in sole possession of second place in the MAC East. The volleyball team is trying to build off of three straight NCAA Tournament appearances. If the RedHawks can make it four, they would love to make it out of the first round.

This past weekend Miami knocked off both Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan at Millett Hall. Senior Maria Leahy leads the team with 227 kills and is second in digs with 187. Freshman Lisa Treadway leads the team in digs with 266. Carolyn Condit's team will have four straight on the road before coming home to face Bowling Green Nov. 5.

All of the success that these teams have displayed so far should be a reason for RedHawk fans to be proud. Oh, and of course we have the No. 1 hockey team in the land too.

Despite what has been a tough football season, I encourage fans to go out and support all of Miami's athletic teams. Expanding your horizons is what college is all about. I am challenging myself to do the same. For those who are seniors, don't miss out on a chance to see a sport that you never have before. There is no better time than the present.
