Miami must honor donors' wishes

I am happy to see Mr. William Mielnicki is concerned with the academic reputation of our university. However, I must say he has a distorted view of how donations are handled not only at Miami University, but in general.

If a donor wishes to have their donation go toward an area of his or her choosing, it is in the best interest of all parties to honor that request. Disregarding a donor's wishes about a monetary contribution will cause a serious loss of future donations from not only that individual but from others as well.

How many alumni would donate money if they could not be assured that the money would be used to the best of their wishes? I agree Miami is facing turbulent economic times, but Mr. Mielnicki should step back and look at what he has proposed in his letter. By his reasoning Richard Farmer's donation for the business school should not only be used for that department but spread across the university to all departments in order to promote academics.

As for the student center, once again I have to say Mr. Mielnicki is off base. My grandparents attended Miami in the 1950s, and they paid for the funding of the Shriver Center through student fees while they themselves never were able to use that building as students. If no previous generation of Miami students paid for future improvements or advancements directly or indirectly there would be no future Miami as we know it.

Every generation wants to leave the future brighter for those who follow. If we take the opposite stance, what does that say about us as the current study body? I want to leave Miami better than I found it. I want those who

follow me to take pride in Miami as I have. Thinking anything else is a "direct slap in the face to all students."
