Dear Readers:
We, the editors of The Miami Student editorial page, have an agenda, and we want to make it known. The editorial page and its companion, the op-ed page, offer news analyses. Thus, in addition to informing readers, the pieces contained within are meant to inspire critical thought and dialogue.
Some of the topics will be inherently controversial. In fact, writers usually choose a subject because it is sensitive or divisive and the community would benefit from public discussion. However, this newspaper is a human-managed endeavor, which means it is vulnerable to human errors.
Although we will strive to consider all perspectives when determining what material is appropriate to print, at some point in the future we will make a mistake and accidentally overlook an interpretation, which may be obvious to one group of readers that was not as obvious to us. On such an occasion, we encourage readers to contact us using the letter to the editor protocol explained in the box above.
By writing either an actual letter to the editor or a guest essay, labeled as such, one will not only draw our attention to our mistake so we may attempt to rectify it, but it also will alert the student body to a view others might not have seen. In this way, a discussion of the issue can follow from which all will benefit.
As the editors of the editorial page, we understand the power of this newspaper's voice and will strive to use it justly. However, we depend on readers to be our judge. We hope all voices can find representation within our pages, which we hope will lessen the likelihood of future misunderstandings.
