If you close your eyes tight enough, listening to Morningbell may resemble a colorful trip through space. The Florida band, which met at the University of Miami, uses a light and bubbly sound to accompany lyrics with depth and impact. Their bassist, Eric Atria, was willing to sit down with Amusement and answer a few questions for the good people of Miami University.

Amusement: So you guys hail from Gainesville, Fla. … how did you find each other, and how long have you been making music?

Eric Atria: Travis (singer/guitarist) and I (bassist) are brothers. Stacie (keyboards) is my wife, we met in Miami and she joined the band after our original keyboardist quit. Chris is our sixth drummer, and we nabbed him from a defunct Gainesville band before anyone else could.

The band has evolved over the years but has never broken up per se. Travis and I have been playing together in a band since December 2000 nonstop, but it evolved into what you see as Morningbell some time in late 2003.

A: You guys have a fairly unique feel to your music, what inspires your sound and the lyrics?

Eric: Travis does 98 percent of the writing, so it's hard for me to say. We're currently incorporating more elements of soul into the sound. I know it's hard for four white kids to pull off soul, but we're trying to sneak it in, in such a manner that doesn't seem phony or contrived.

A: For all those struggling musicians/students out there, what were your majors at the University of Miami?

Eric: I was in psychology. Travis was English and Stacie was in music performance

A: Any thoughts on Miami University?

Eric: Never been. I think it's interesting that such a unique name for a city can exist in two drastically different places. I know Miami is an old Indian word, which means "sweet water." I'm assuming it's something similar up there.

A: Good answer, I think most of us RedHawks are used to a bashing from your Hurricanes. Final question, where did Travis' fuzzy white hat come from?

Eric: Ha ha ha, that's a new addition. Some girl left that at our house years ago at some costume party. Travis wore it one show night when it was cold out and people loved it. I'm not sure why, but everyone loves the damn hat. So, he kind of recently adopted it.

If you're into choose-your-own-adventure books and melodic journeys, Morningbell is worth lending an ear to hear.
