Being given the chance to try out an iPhone application for free became quite the honor after I discovered it gave me the chance to set pygmies on fire and have them speared as sacrifices underwater.
Yeah, that's right, I said pygmies.
Pocket God, developed by Bolt Creative, gives iPhone and iPod Touch owners the chance to serve as a god to the pygmies, making them do anything (and everything) you want them to do. As the iTunes App Store says, "You can bring new life, and then take it away just as quickly."
Sounds like one for the kids, right?
I've tried playing this game for more than an hour, and I still haven't even figured out everything that you can make these little pygmies do. I've thrown them into shark-infested water and even created a hurricane that swept them all up.
How sad for my little pygmies.
Did I mention the pygmies have the coolest names ever? Klik, Klak, Ooga, Booga, Dooby and … well, do I really need to keep going with this?
Now, for the actual game.
Because there is a point to it. Kind of.
The game features different episodes and challenges that users can create. The latest: Dead Pygmy Walking, where the pygmies are placed in a graveyard. Watch out for brain-eating zombies! Challenges are user-created, though there are some games such as "Sharks with Lasers" and "Bait Master" that already exist. Did anything I just say not sound sexual?
This version of the application went up for sale Sept. 17 on iTunes and already has more than 3,600 ratings so obviously it's entertaining, but that's about as far as I'd go to say how good it is.
The creators of this game create new episodes regularly and ask for user suggestions so they can rework bugs and add new features players would like to see. For more info, check out the iTunes App Store or the Pocket God blog at http://pocketgod.blogspot.com/.
